Though the statistics show a decline in other crimes, Benoni cluster commander Brig Vuyokazi Ndebele is worried about those that are increasing.
“Although we are doing well in fighting other crimes, we still have some challenges,” she said.
“It’s never easy to catch car thieves and house and business robbers, hence we appeal to the community to beef up security in their homes and for their cars.
“Where possible, we urge people to install CCTV cameras and alarm systems on their properties, and always to remember to activate them.
“CCTV cameras are useful when it comes to tracing the culprits.”
Ndebele also appealed to community members to look after each other’s properties and to report crime as soon as it occurs.
Her wish is to establish a domestic workers’ forum, to be able to share crime tips with domestic workers, as most property crimes occur while they are on duty.
She also called on the community to help to reduce rape crimes and illegal mining.
Ndebele said that police are more than willing to visit schools, to educate pupils about their rights, in order to help prevent rape crimes and encourage them to report such incidents.
