Handbag snatcher operates in wider area

The Crystal Park SAPS precinct has been targeted by a man snatching domestic workers' handbags.

In the past year, four robbery cases were opened in the precinct by women whose bags were stolen.

These cases appear to be linked to a man who reportedly robbed domestic workers of their handbags in the Benoni SAPS precinct.

On June 6, the City Times reported on a woman who was robbed of her bag outside her place of employment, in Rynfield, on May 23.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said the modus operandi and vehicle description in that incident is similar to the cases reported in Crystal Park.

Maritz added that domestic workers in the Crystal Park precinct were robbed by a white man, driving a white Corsa bakkie.

”In all the cases, the suspects drove next to the victims and then grabbed their handbags and drove off,” she explained.

”There were also no number plates on the vehicle.”

The person perpetrates his crimes just before 7am and between 4pm and 5pm.

Maritz warned people to carry their handbags on their shoulder facing away from the road, not to walk alone and to note the vehicle’s registration number and model, if possible.
