Team Joburg South wins Caxton Reynolds Race 2014
After three months of intense, exciting, emotional and sometimes aggressive competition amongst eight local teams, team Joburg South, comprising Prema and Dheshan Naran, walked away as the winners of the Caxton Reynolds Race 2014.
They received an all-expenses paid trip to Zanzibar, courtesy of South African Reynolds Travel Centre, in Springs. The final leg of the competition took place this past weekend, August 2, when the top four teams raced from Brakpan to Springs, to the final pit stop.
From the start of the race, in May, the eight teams from various towns in Ekurhuleni had to go through rigorous and fun challenges for eight weeks, to earn points along the way, to qualify among the top teams for the finals.
These included swimming in ice cold water in the middle of winter, grocery shopping, cake decorating and cake eating, being locked in a -15 degrees C freezer, catching a Metrorail train from Brakpan to Springs, playing with tigers in Brakpan and eating 10 lemons in minutes.
All eight teams showed commitment and vigor throughout the competition, all the way to the finals.
In the final leg, the race kicked off in Brakpan, in Sherwood Gardens, with two tigers, Enzo and Lorenzo, setting the scene, from where the teams had to race to the Brakpan Railway Station, where one team member had to catch a Metrorail train from Brakpan to Springs and the others had to drive, to wait for their arrival at the Springs station.
From the Springs station they had to drive to the South African Reynolds Travel Centre in Springs, where they had to peal 20 lemons with their hands and one team member had to eat 10 of the lemons.
They then had to race to the Springs Airfield — the final pit stop for the race.
Team Joburg South were always in the lead along the way and they made it to the final stop way ahead of the others.
“We are very happy and thankful that we made it, all blood, sweat and tears; my wife‘s lips are bleeding from all the lemons, but it was a lot of fun and we would do it again in a heartbeat.” said an emotional and happy Dheshan.
Kirsty Hutchinson, from the marketing group of the South African Reynolds Travel Centre, thanked all the sponsors who came on board to help to organise the amazing prize of a trip to Zanzibar.
This is the second running of the race and the Caxton East/South branch would like to say a big thank you to all the sponsors, South African Reynolds Travel Centre, Hirsch’s Boksburg. Market Super Spar Kenilworth and Market Super Spar Benoni for their support, and a big thank you to all the teams for their participation.
