Five injured in N12 accident

Five people, including a one-year-old baby, were injured when two vehicles rolled on the N12 highway, just before the Etwatwa off-ramp.

The accident, involving a bakkie and a light motor vehicle, occurred on Saturday, shortly before 5am.

The collision caused both vehicles to come to a standstill in the veld next to the highway.

“Paramedics went to assess the occupants of the light motor vehicle, who were walking around on the scene, and were told that a person, believed to be driver of the bakkie, was seen running across the field shortly after the collision,” said ER24 JHB East spokesperson Glen Orritt.

“All the occupants of the light motor vehicle, a family of four, including a one-year-old baby, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance for further care.”

While the patients were being treated, paramedics and fire services found a man in his late 20s several metres from the badly damaged bakkie.

“Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had suffered severe injuries and was in a critical condition,” said Orritt.

He was placed on a manual ventilator before being transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital by ER24.

Fire and emergency services searched until sunrise for more victims, but could not locate any.
