Rand Water media relations manager Justice Mohale told the City Times this morning that the outage occurred at the Eikenhof Pumping Station, on Monday, at 3am.
He said Rand Water was unable to pump water to its reservoirs during the power outage.
As a result, parts of Johannesburg and Benoni suburbs (Crystal Park, Cloverdene and Fairleads) have been without water or experienced a sporadic flow since Friday.
Mohale said water was pumped into the empty reservoirs on Monday afternoon, at maximum levels.
The media relations manager added that water levels in the reservoirs should ideally be normalised in seven hours, but that this has been complicated due to the high demand, caused by the warm temperatures.
Rand Water is still experiencing a backlog as a result of the downtime period.
Mohale said water should be restored to the affected areas by the weekend, which would be a level of 60 to 80 per cent water levels in the reservoir.
The City Times is still waiting for comment from Ekurhuleni and to establish if water trucks will be stationed in affected areas.
