Benoni SAPS acting commander Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen said the police had received a tip-off regarding the planned ambush.
“There are two suspects appearing in court for murder today and we heard that they were planning to assassinate the magistrate,” said Van Nieuwenhuizen.
He added that the police have already searched the entire premises and no firearms were found.
The building has been secured by the police and it will remain so for the whole day.
Police have manned the entrance to the court, searching all those entering the premises.
