UPDATE: Suspect in plan to ambush magistrate Schutte arrested

The Benoni SAPS arrested one suspect believed to be part of the plan to assassinate magistrate Mitzi Schutte, at the Benoni Magistrates Court, this morning (October 21).

The man was arrested inside courtroom one, a few minutes before Schutte entered.

Police said the plan was to ambush the magistrate and escape.

“We have arrested one man, who conspired to commit the assassination,” said Benoni SAPS cluster commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah.

Subbiah added that the one arrested in court and one of the two suspects who were appearing in court, are wanted on a murder case in Randfontein.

“My policemen must do what is right if you confront them — they take you down, they don’t commit murder, they take you down,” said Subbiah.

The suspect is expected to appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.

Meanwhile, Schutte continued with the business of the day, despite the threats.
