Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the two-year-olds consumed the poison that was placed in their home to control rodents.
The girls’ grandmother, who was at work, called the mothers of the children (who were with the children at home) to warn them about the poison.
Sekele said one of the mothers moved the rat poison to a different area of the home, but one of the mothers later noticed that the poison was gone, and that both children were vomiting.
The girls were rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital, in Springs, where the surviving girl is in a critical condition.
Sekele said police are investigating the case and cannot yet say whether anyone will be arrested.
