Car Jacking is one of the key crime concerns for Daveyton SAPS

The Daveyton SAPS is concerned about the escalating numbers of car hijackings in the area.

Police spokesperson Sgt Constance Moalusi called on the community to heed the following possible solutions to assist in the fight against this crime.

  •  Motorists must be more aware of their environment and be more vigilant when driving.
  •  Do not use cell phones while driving or waiting at the traffic lights.
  •  Do not park vehicles on the pavements, especially at night.
  •  Keep all windows and doors locked and don’t leave any belongings lying around in the vehicle.
  •  Vehicle owners should consider installing tracking devices in their vehicles to make them easy to trace when stolen.

Moalusi said that, from their side, the SAPS will commit to accomplishing the following:

  •  Increasing roadblocks and stop-and-search operations;
  •  Improving their database of liquor outlets;
  •  Increasing their informer network;
  •  Localising their investigations.

She also appealed to all victims of car hijacking in Daveyton, since April 2014, to come for counselling at the station’s Victim Empowerment Centre.

The Daveyton SAPS will be hosting a Tavern Intervention Programme, together with SAB and Medsa (Men Empowerment Development in South Africa), at Pule’s Chisa Nyama Pub, at 6142 Mabaso and Mockie streets, in Daveyton, on the following dates:

  •  November 11, from 9am to 1pm.
  •  November 12, from 9am to 1pm.
  •  November 13, from 9am to 1pm.
  •  November 14, from 9am to 1pm.

This is aimed at educating men on:

  •  responsible alcohol consumption;
  •  HIV/Aids;
  •  gender-based violence;
  •  children’s rights/abuse and parental responsibilities.
