SAB inspires attitudinal and behavioural change in men through TIP

A total of 151 Daveyton men graduated from the South African Breweries (SAB)' Tavern Intervention Programme on November 19.

Graduates received certificates of participation at a ceremony held at the Benoni Country Club.

This follows a four-day workshop held in the area, at which men were engaged on various social issues, including responsible alcohol consumption, HIV and Aids, gender-based violence, child abuse and rights and parental responsibilities.

The workshop was facilitated by SAB partner, Men for Development South Africa (Medsa), took place at Mabaso Shisa Nyama in Daveyton.

SAB further collaborated with the Daveyton SAPS, the South African Association of Youth Clubs SAAYC and an NGO, Fathers and Sons.

SAB corporate affairs manager, Millicent Maroga, said that through the workshop in taverns across the country, TIP aims to drive attitudinal and behavioural change in men.

“TIP seeks to provide men with appropriate skills and knowledge to effectively help combat crimes closely linked to alcohol abuse and is one of the few programmes of its kind in existence in the country,” said Maroga.

She said their greatest wish, this week, was that they were able to make a significantly positive contribution to the community of Daveyton and its surrounds by equipping “these brave men” with the tools they need to change their lives, that of their families and their communities.

Maroga said that amongst others matters, men were educated on the importance of eating and drinking water when consuming alcohol,.

“They were also educated on how to accommodate people infected and affected by HIV and Aids, the importance of circumcision in the promotion of men’s health, understanding and promoting the rights of women and children, conflict resolution, family values and healthy living,” explained Maroga.

TIP was first introduced in 2008 as a pilot programme and officially launched in 2010, ending in 2012, reaching a total of 2 000 men in the country.
