Armed man steals police member’s pistol on Snake Road

Five people managed to escape arrest after one of them fired a shot at the police and made off with a pistol belonging to a police member.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Tryna Maritz said members of the Benoni SAPS and their student constables pulled off a red Toyota Hilux on the corner of Snake and New Modder roads, in the early hours of Saturday morning (November 29).

“They pulled over a double cab bakkie which had no number plates,” said Maritz.

“When they were told to stop, one guy jumped out with a R5 rifle and fired one shot.”

The bullet hit a police vehicle’s bonnet.

The man wielding the rifle made off with one of the officer’s guns.

The men fled towards the N12 highway, but police were unable to locate them.

No one was injured.

A case of robbery and murder will be opened.
