The 18-year-old aced English home language (where he finished in the top one per cent), Afrikaans first additional language, mathematics, physical sciences, accounting, business studies (top one per cent), advanced programme mathematics and life orientation, at an average of 90 per cent.
The Northvilla resident said he was happy with the results he achieved and performed better in some subjects than he had expected.
“I enjoyed being at school and loved the subjects I had,” he said.
“It is a lot easier studying subjects you enjoy.”
You would be wrong for thinking De Gouveia was all work and no play.
He had enough time to study towards nailing his matric exams, play sport and have a social life.
The youngster captained his school’s second cricket side, and played hockey and chess for St Dunstan’s.
“I always enjoyed myself, but when it was time to work, I worked,” said De Gouveia.
“For me it was all about self-discipline.”
De Gouveia told this year’s matrics to work hard towards their goals.
“It is about getting marks you want for yourself and not anyone else,” he said.
“It is a lot easier to work towards your own goals than somebody else’s.”
The youngster will take his passion for maths to the next level this year when he studies towards a degree in actuarial sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.
