Man shot at Homestead Dam this morning
A man is believed to have committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart, inside a toilet by Homestead Dam, this morning.
Benoni SAPS acting station commander Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen said the incident occurred at the corner of Wilge and Reitz roads, at around 6.30am.
He said the 47-year-old man was found dead with a bullet wound in the chest.
The deceased parked his car several metres from the toilet where his body was found.
John Makola, who works as a cleaner at Homestead Dam, told the City Times that he saw the deceased minutes before he died.
“I was sitting on the bench [about 20m away], then looked at the toilet and saw a man smoking outside the building,” said Makola.
“When he finished smoking he went inside the toilet and then I heard ‘twa'”.
Makola said there were two women walking on the road, and they looked around when they heard what sounded like a gunshot.
“I went inside and said, ‘hello, hello’, but there was no answer,” said Makola.
“I saw the man inside had blood on his chest. I walked out and called my boss.”
Van Nieuwenhuizen said the police have opened an inquest docket regarding the death of the man.
The deceased’s identity could not be released as his family still has to be notified.
