Ekurhuleni working to repair broken water pipe

The water interruption, which has been affected parts of Benoni since yesterday morning, is expected to be resolved by late this afternoon (January 23).

Councillor Stefanie Kruger said Northmead, Farrarmere, Brentwood Park and parts of Rynfield were without water from 6am on January 22.

She told the City Times that a 44mm pipe burst at the water reservoir in Northmead, on Hospital Road.

Ekurhuleni’s commenced repair of the pipe shortly after it burst.

Repair teams clamped the pipe last night in order to restore water to affected areas between midnight and 5am this morning, but have had to cut supply this morning to replace the broken section of the pipeline.

Kruger said work on the repair was hampered by the need to drill through rock surrounding the pipe.

Clr Mary Goby said the broken pipe is a result of infrastructure not being replaced.

“Ekurhuleni has never upgraded pipes in a lot of areas,” said Goby.

“The life span of a pipe is 60 years, but they let it go for 80 to 90 years.”

Goby said she has submitted petitions to have water infrastructure upgraded, but that nothing has come from council.

Ekurhuleni could not be reached for comment.
