Daveyton residents protest over unmet promises

A total of 50 to 80 Daveyton residents went back to the streets protesting and demanding to occupy empty land, close to Mayfield Square.

According Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni cluster spokesperson, the residents started protesting at 3am this morning (Thursday February 12).

They blocked roads with burning tyres and threw garbage on the roads.

“They said the strike was provoked by Department of Housing officials who promised to address their land issues but did not arrive,” said Sekele.

At the moment, EMPD and SAPS are on scene to monitor the situation.

“The residents are standing around in small groups but they are not doing anything because the situation is being monitored by the EMPD,” said Sekele

In August, Daveyton residents took to the streets after they were removed from land which they occupied illegally.

According to Ekurhuleni the disputed land is demarcated for Chief Albert Luthuli Park residents, who were removed from Bapsfontein because of the dangerous situation in the area.
