Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said most housebreakings are committed during the day, when home owners are at work and children at school.
Maritz said the public must heed the following tips to reduce their risk of falling victim to housebreakings:
- Residents are urged to ensure that they never leave doors, windows and gates open when they are not at home.
- All doors and windows must be secured. Ensure that all windows have burglar proofing. It seems that houses with modern window frames are being targeted, and entry is gained by forcing the windows open.
- The SAPS is advising the community to secure doors with security gates.
- Never place empty boxes which contained electronic equipment, such as Plasma TVs, DVD players, video game consoles, etc., on the pavement. Criminals target these homes, as they know they contain valuables.
- An alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can act as an effective deterrent.
- An alarm must also have the capability to warn the occupants of any intrusion into the house.
Maritz said people must report all suspicious persons and vehicles to the police, by phoning either the client service centre or the sector vehicle, with, if possible, a description of the suspicious-looking vehicles and persons.
All dog poisoning cases must be reported, in order for the SAPS to do extra patrols in the area.
