The women, aged between 26 and 70, were travelling in a taxi, in Etwatwa Mandela Section, when they were stopped by police officers, who proceeded to check the vehicle.
“When the members started searching the vehicle, they came across plastic bags which the women were trying to shove underneath their seats,” said Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson.
When the bags were opened, police found copper cables with an estimated street value of between R40 000 and R50 000.
The women were arrested and detained at Etwatwa SAPS and a case of possession of suspected stolen property was opened.
All eight women will appear at the Daveyton Magistrates Court soon.
