The programme is an international initiative programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is active in 51 countries around the world.
Eco-School was introduced to South Africa in 2003, and it aims at creating awareness and action around environmental sustainability in schools and their surrounding communities.
There are over 1 200 schools registered on the programme.
Peta-Anne Leigh, Eco-schools co-ordinator, said St Dunstan’s College joined the Eco-Schools programme in 2010 and is the only school in Gauteng that is both a conservancy and an international flag eco-school.
In 2010 the school received the bronze award, in 2011 the silver award, in 2012 the green flag award, in 2013 the gold award and, in 2014, its international flag.
