Criminals lift burglar bars to enter homes

A vast majority of housebreaking cases in the Crystal Park SAPS precinct involve criminals lifting or cutting burglar bars to gain entry into homes.

This is according to Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz who said one such incident occurred on March 26, at a home on Aurora Street.

According to Maritz, the housebreaking took place at 3.15am, while a family of four were asleep.

When the male occupant woke up, he noticed that a Plazma TV and remote for the TV had been stolen.

Maritz said the criminals appeared to have cut the burglar bars and entered through a window that they somehow managed to open.

The home owner told the police the window through which the criminals gained entry was shut.

A case of housebreaking and theft has been opened.

No arrests have been made.

Crystal Park SAPS suspect two groups of people are responsible for housebreaking incidents in the area.

Maritz said one of the groups are targeting homes during the day, between 8am and 2pm, when home owners are at work, and children at school.

The other group operates during the early hours of the morning, between 1am and 4am.

The criminals are looking for Plasma TVs, jewellery, and small electrical items such as play stations, cell phones, tablets, Ipads, and laptops.

On March 12, the City Times reported that housebreakings were on the increase in Crystal Park.

Maritz said people must report all suspicious people and vehicles to the police, by phoning either the client service centre or the sector vehicle, with, if possible, a description.

All dog poisoning cases must be reported in order for the SAPS to do extra patrols in the area.
