Two arrested after Wimpy robbery

Two of the seven men suspected of robbing Wimpy Lakefield were arrested shortly after the crime, on March 29.

The restaurant was robbed at around 7.20pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the men, two of whom were armed, drove to the Wimpy in a Toyota Quantum.

She said a man, who was driving with his wife in a car en route to the restaurant, noticed the car transporting the suspects driving behind him

Shortly after the pair entered the restaurant, the robbers entered through the front door.

“They pointed a firearm at the woman and her colleague [Wimpy staff],” said Sekele.

“They were instructed to keep quiet and open the till.”

The suspects robbed the woman (who entered with her husband) of her purse and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money from the till.

Sekele said no other customers were robbed.

Saber Tactical’s tactical reaction team manager, Sean Stopford, said the customer whose wife’s purse was stolen chased after the men.

A source within the police said two shots were fired in the man’s direction outside the Wimpy, but he was not injured.

Stopford said the security company was notified of the incident and issued a lookout alert to its vehicles.

The company apprehended two men on the N12, beneath the Voortrekker Street bridge; they were barefoot and drenched in water.

Police are investigating a case of business robbery.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
