Teenager dies after being assaulted

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele confirmed this morning that the teenager was assaulted with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

She said police do not, at this stage, know who assaulted the woman, where she was assaulted and under what circumstances.

She said the woman lived in a flat in the suburb of Jatniel.

There were numerous reports on social media alleging that the victim was raped in the Jatniel area, but police cannot confirm this at present.

Police will this morning (Tuesday) interview the parents of the deceased, who live in Nigel, and visit the mortuary where the body is being stored.

An inquest docket has been opened and police are investigating.
