Man flees at sight of police

Police arrested a man on May 12 who fled from the vehicle he was occupying, after becoming nervous of two police officers who rolled up next to him.

“Two constables were patrolling on Main Reef Road, Kingsway and parked next to a Mercedes Benz,” said Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

“They were surprised when the driver of the vehicle jumped out of the vehicle and started running.

“This made the members suspicious and they ran after him.”

Const Nhlanhla Hlophe and Const Sizwe Mahlobo caught the man.

They searched the 36-year-old and discovered ammunition and a firearm with the serial numbers filed off in his possession.

“Upon questioning, he informed the members that he ran away because he thought they came to arrest him for a housebreaking committed in April,” said Sekele.

The suspect will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He has also been linked to the above-mentioned housebreaking case.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on May 13.
