Two suspects nabbed for armed robbery at train station

A train commuter was robbed yesterday afternoon (July 9), at the Northmead Railway Station.

The man was stopped by four knife-wielding thugs between the ages of 19 and 25.

“They robbed the victim of his shoes, R200 and a cellphone,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“It was a sheer luck-filled coincidence for the victim that, just after the robbery, he noticed a Metro Police vehicle, which he flagged down and provided the officers with description of his attackers.”

EMPD Equestrian Unit members were able to apprehend two of the four suspects and retrieved all the victim’s belongings.

One suspect was found with a knife.

“It emerged that one of the suspects is out on bail following arrest for theft,” said Kgasago.

A case of armed robbery was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

The suspects will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court today (July 10).
