Newborn baby girl found dumped in a bin

A newborn baby is being kept in hospital for mandatory observation, after she was found dumped in a bin next to the veld at Mahlobo Street, in Daveyton, on Sunday (July 12).

The infant, estimated to be a couple of days old, was found in the bin by a passing security guard who immediately called the police.

Police confirmed that the baby was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for a medical examination.

Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Constance Moalusi said the little girl is recovering well in hospital.

“The baby didn’t appear to be neglected,” she added.

”The site where she was left is regularly used by pedestrians, which meant that the child was found quickly, before she could suffocate.

“The infant was found undressed, with a blanket next to the bin.”

Police are investigating a case of child abandonment and urge anyone who knows the baby’s family to phone the Daveyton SAPS on 011 845 9821.
