Police ready to ‘hunt’ criminals
Police have taken a pro-active approach to fighting violent crime, after a task team was set up to "hunt" criminals responsible for committing aggravated robberies within the Benoni police cluster precinct.
Acting Benoni SAPS cluster commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah set up a team consisting of 11 dedicated police officers on Tuesday, August 11.
The acting cluster commander said the team of “hunters” are all highly experienced, motivated and possess a “zero tolerance approach to crime”.
The unit will be led by Capt Alie van den Berg.
They will gather intelligence on criminals, attempt to link criminals to other crimes, trace suspects on the run and search for wanted persons.
The six police stations within the cluster are Benoni, Daveyton, Actonville, Crystal Park, Etwatwa and Putfontein.
“I set up the task team due to the fact that there are serious violent crime and criminals in the cluster,” said Subbiah.
He said most of the criminals live outside the borders of the Benoni police cluster precinct.
“I found a need to establish a unit to compile a database on these criminals,” he added.
Subbiah said the team arrested three people in Benoni on Friday, for vehicle-related crimes.
“My history of task teams has proved well in the past,” said Subbiah.
“We are not built for failure; we are built for success.
“The information from the community is tantamount to our success.”
The public is urged to tip off police about criminals or criminal activity.
Informers whose information lead to a conviction will receive a financial reward.
People with information on criminal activity can contact van den Berg on 082 309 3027, or Subbiah on 082 447 4986.
