N12 dramatic shooting: Police kill one, injure two

Fanie Mthupha and Maile Matsimela, Boksburg Advertiser report: Bloodstained clothes lay scattered on the barricaded side of the N12 Highway after three thugs were shot by members of the Hawks this afternoon, September 1.

The incident occurred just before the Jet Park Bridge on the highway.

Members of the Hawks were acting on a tip-off about a suspicious looking charcoal Audi.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieut-Col Katlego Mogale said it a shoot-out ensued when members of the Hawks tried to pull over the Audi, which had three occupants in it.

The occupants of the Audi then fired shots at the police.

“Police returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect and leaving the other two injured,” said Mogale.

The two were transported to hospital under police guard. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered.

Police arrested four other men, travelling in a black Golf, not far from the scene believed to accomplices of the three.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that one of the suspects has been involved in other crimes and was previously arrested,” said Mogale.

Traffic was slowed down for three hours as police gathered information at the scene.

The six men will be charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit crime as well as possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
