It’s more than just a hobby
Imagine wide, landscapes, depicting different parts of the world all in one space, with trains running through them.
The Eastern Model Railway Interest Group (EMRIG) provides this environment at the Northmead Mall, when they open their doors for the public to admire their countless railway model creations.
Colin Tanner-Tremaine, chairman of the group, said it was started 32 years ago with just 12 members.
He joined in January 2007, and introduced digital control of the trains.
The hobby club has diverse members who work in different industries, such as engineering, accountancy and dentistry.
Seeing the scenery that many of the members have built, one cannot help but admire the hard work that goes into creating a well run model railway train.
“It is important that we create or design a world on which our trains will run,” said Colin.
The members own various types of models, including English, South African, German and American trains.
Colin said it is very satisfying being able to build something and seeing the finished product.
Previously it would be strange see a South African train running next to a German or American train.
“The club grew over the years, because we allowed members to own a variety of trains they like,” said Colin.
The trains are modelled after a variety of trains from different eras, such as the 1950s.
EMRIG members often take their exhibitions to different areas and workshops.
“From our visits we all learn from each other how to fix our problems and to see new creations,” he said.
If you are shopping at Northmead Mall on a Wednesday, between 9am and noon, or on Saturday, between 9am and 4pm, then visit Paddington Station.
