The sentence was handed down in the Benoni Regional Court on October 27.
Tebogo Trevor Thebela and his accomplice, who has not been arrested, assaulted and robbed a man of his wallet at the corner of Tom Jones Street and Lake Avenue on May 9.
Two police officers witnessed the incident and managed to apprehend Thebela.
The other suspect evaded arrest and police are still searching for him.
