UPDATE: Eleven bodies found in New Modder mine shaft

Heavy police presence marked the spot where 11 bodies were found today, November 17.

The bodies of the suspected illegal miners were found piled up in a mine shaft near Daveyton Road, in New Modder.

“At around 8am, a community member reported to police that a family member was injured at a mine shaft,” said Capt Tsekiso Mofokeng, provincial SAPS spokesperson.

“Police investigated and initially one body was found at the entrance of the shaft.

“Further investigation revealed 10 other bodies inside the shaft and a 9mm pistol with live rounds was found.”

Mines Rescue Services was on scene and in the process of retrieving the bodies, after which the second part of the police investigation was expected to start.
