Sewage leak is fixed
A sewage leak that was causing problems for residents of the N12 informal settlement, was recently repaired by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM).
According to Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, the municipality was made aware of the issue on November 28, and has since attended to and repaired it.
A Crystal Park resident, who was concerned about the well-being of people living in the N12 informal settlement, brought the leak to City Times’s attention.
Gideon van der Merwe claimed that sewage, which had been running out of the sewer network at two points, flowed alongside and through properties.
Van der Merwe was worried about the impact this water would have on the community, as well as the impact it would have had on the environment and local river systems, especially since the country is suffering from a drought.
“I called the council’s office a while ago, but I was told that the council is aware of the problem and that they would sort it out,” he said.
Residents were also concerned about the water flowing through their properties.
According to a resident, who did not want to be named, the sewage had been leaking for the past four or five months.
Gadebe said the sewer could become blocked at any time.
