SPCA receives influx of strays

The Benoni SPCA has taken in a large number of stray pets since New Year’s Eve.

The flashes and noise from the fireworks scare and disorientate numerous pets each year, often leading to them becoming lost, especially with many pet owners on holiday.

Shelley Owens, co-chairperson of the organisation, said no injured animals had come in but the numbers were astounding, keeping the staff very busy over the weekend after January 1.

Owens urged members of the public who had lost their pets or anyone who found a stray animal, to check in with the SPCA.

She said anyone looking for their pet would have to describe it at the organisation, where a system of cross-referencing will be used to find the correct pets.

The Benoni SPCA is at 3 Klein Street, Lakefield and can be contacted on 011 894 2814/5.
