Illegal mining implements seized

The EMPD said a “huge quantity” of illegal mining implement, used in illicit mining, was confiscated at Lindelani informal settlement on January 7.

The operation was conducted from 9.30am to 2pm in a joint undertaking between the Benoni SAPS and EMPD members.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said after the calmness of illegal activities during the festive season, law enforcers were made aware of the resumption of illegal mining operations.

“During the operation one suspect was arrested and other suspects evaded arrest by disappearing into the disused mine shaft,” said Kgasago.

Police confiscated four gas bottles, 10 pendukas (a bowl used for sifting gold particles), 15 penduka stands, three bowls with gold dust, nine steel pots, generators and two wheelbarrows.

The suspect is detained at the Benoni Police Station.
