Providing a helping hand
With the drought currently ravaging the country, pupils at the Benoni Muslim School, in Mackenzie Park, contributed 5 000 bottles of water to the #OperationHydrate initiative.
The school, together with the Benoni Woman’s Forum and the Council of Muslim Theologians (Jamaitul Ulama Benoni) decided to take part in this initiative.
The water that was collected was intended for areas such as Vryheid, QwaQwa, Vryberg, KwaZulu-Natal and Swartruggens.
Zaahidah Docrat, a Benoni Muslim School pupil, said: “This experience was overwhelming; we heard people were suffering and it felt great to know that we can help them survive.”
Pupil Nadia Sirkhoth said: “It feels really good making a difference in other people’s lives.”
Both girls emphasised that they felt the urge to do something and to put other people first.
This initiative also taught them to appreciate what they have and to know that the outcome is self-rewarding.
Creating awareness and encouraging other schools to get involved in this initiative is the sole purpose of this project.
“The demand for water is high at the moment and we aim to provide people with drinkable water,” said #OperationHydrate representative Abdullah Loonat.
Nasser Ebrahim, Benoni Muslim School principal, said: “We know how important water is and we had to teach the children the importance of water.
“We would also like to encourage other schools to get involved in this project.”
