EMPD officer arrested after CBD shooting
An EMPD officer was arrested for attempted murder after he shot a man on Saturday, February 13.
Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson said the victim was shot once in the face and taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital.
No other injuries were reported and at the time of publication it was unclear how many shots had been fired.
She said the incident occurred on the corner of Tom Jones Street and Bedford Avenue, in the CBD between 4am and 5am.
“The officer said the men attacked him, after which he shot at them,” Sekele said.
“There were around six of them (men against the officer).”
Sekele added that the officer told police he had been on duty during the incident and he had been alone.
The case was opened at the Benoni Police Station and the investigation was ongoing at the time of publication.
The officer was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 15.
