Benoni resident’s book makes it abroad
Brentwood Park resident John Rabe’s fortune changed when his first novel, entitled “Switched Fortunes”, caught the attention of British independent publishing house, Austin Macauley, last year.
Previously known only as a legal and bankruptcy specialist, car collector and builder, and writer for various car magazines, Rabe now has the fortune of adding one more accomplishment to his resumé.
The 67-year-old is one of a few local authors whose very first novel was published abroad.
“I submitted the story to them, and long story short, they sent a contract to me and the book was published this year on January 29,” Rabe said.
Rabe started writing his book in 2007 and completed most of it.
Unfortunately, due to his demanding job in the legal department at the time, he had to place writing the book on hold.
What makes his book so intriguing, is the constant twists in the story line, which readers do not see coming.
The story is a combination of action, thriller and suspense.
Rabe always had a knack for writing long pieces.
This, together with personal experience of visiting the countries that he wrote about in his book, gave him the perfect first novel.
The fiction-based story is set during mid-1990, and characters travel through parts of South Africa, London, Singapore, France and Sri Lanka.
“Two totally unrelated men from different walks of life; Kevin Richardson, is a car designer and part-time racing driver, while Chris Jensen is a struggling, international salesman, are brought together through a bizarre set of circumstances,” Rabe said.
The title derives from the plot where the two men, mistakenly become involved in a drug syndicate.
“As the plot unfolds, various police forces and Interpol get involved, in attempt to protect the main characters, while pursuing the gang,” Rabe said.
The new author is humbled by Macauley’s interest in his book, and hinted that he is in the process of writing another book, but refused to disclose if his next book is part two of Switched Fortunes.
Rabe’s book is currently available on Amazon.
