Shaky economy threatens Benoni Mega Mall
The weakening economy might be the death of the planned Benoni Mega Mall.

“It’s difficult to motivate a developer to invest money in infrastructure if the retail market is not ready for a new mall, given a weakening economy,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
Mandela Mokoena, a representative of the developer, Mont Blanc Projects and Properties (Pty) Ltd, previously said the project will definitely still go ahead.
The mall was planned to be built on the corner of Glen Gory and Elm roads, in Vlakfontein, and would have opened to the public this year.
However, the metro and Mokoena stated that the development is being held up by negotiations between Mont Blanc and the municipality, regarding the bulk fee to be paid.
This bulk fee will be used to upgrade infrastructure in the area, to accommodate the mall’s construction.
“All the necessary environmental and engineering studies have been undertaken and there is a very good understanding regarding what upgrades are required and the cost implications,” Gadebe added.
Furthermore, he said: “In terms of the current rights for the property, the bulk contribution is estimated above R300-million.”
