The incident occurred at the Wattville Hostel, on May 21.
According to Actonville police spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe, it is alleged that the mother left her daughter to sleep when she went to the shop with her sister.
“The woman locked the door when she left the house,” said Maqabe.
“When they got back, she heard her child crying and, when she went inside, she found her neighbour sitting on the bed with his trousers down.”
The man was arrested soon after the incident occurred.
He has been charged with rape and is due to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, soon.
