Problematic power supply continues

We have not yet seen light at the end of the tunnel, but all areas without power are expected to be fully operational by Tuesday (June 7) morning.

On Sunday morning (June 5), the substation burned due to an electrical failure causing several areas to lose electricity, a re-occurrence of what happened at the same substation in January.

“Affected areas include, Rynfield proper, Crystal Park, Ebotse Golf and Country Estate and the surrounding areas,” Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.

The EMM was not specific about which areas the surrounding areas are.

Some areas did regain power on Sunday afternoon, but others did not.

According to Gadebe, the areas which did not receive power yesterday, will receive power today.

“The rotational load reduction process entails that the affected areas will share power supply,” he said.

“Those who were switched on yesterday will be switched off today for the duration of the repairs.”

However, areas including Crystal Park have not seen the light at the end of this tunnel.

“We have not had any power since Sunday,” said a Crystal Park resident, Phumzile Mdlalose.

“The meat in my freezer is going off and our alarms are not working which makes it a crime risk.”

According to the EMM, the reason for some areas still not having power despite the rotational load, is due to the severity of the power cut affecting the area.

Although the EMM was unsuccessful in being fully operational by Monday (June 6) as they stated on Sunday (June 5), the repair work are in the advanced stages.

“The EMM wishes to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused,” Gadebe said.
