The final decision was made at a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held by the ANC on June 18.

Masina currently occupies the position of Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and is the Ekurhuleni ANC regional chairman.
“The ANC is satisfied and confident that the mayoral candidates presented consist of some of the best comrades amongst our ranks to advance our programme of radical socio-economic transformation,” said ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe, in a statement following the meeting.
Meanwhile, the DA’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, Ghaleb Cachalia, claims Masina has “done very little” as Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.
“Ekurhuleni requires a leader who will grasp the challenges of unemployment head-on and deliver growth,” said Cachalia.
“The people of this city deserve a leader whose party has the track record of delivering services to all, especially the poor, cutting corruption and creating jobs.”
Cachalia has challenged Masina to a debate on the issues that face Ekurhuleni residents.
