Police urge residents to be more vigilant

The Benoni police urge community members to be more alert, as there has been an increase in criminal activities in and around the area.

The warning follows the reporting of several robberies, residential break-ins and thefts of and out of motor vehicles.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, said they are appealing to the community not to create opportunities for criminals to commit crime.

“Several times we have pleaded with the community not to leave valuables, such as laptops, handbags, cellphones and money etc., inside their vehicles, especially when they are parked on the streets in the central business area, and especially around the shopping malls,” she said.

“Criminals are always searching for an opportunity to get easy money, thus residents must realise that five minutes away from a vehicle is like 30 minutes for a criminal to commit a crime.”

Sekele warned that, after visiting a bank or ATM to withdraw money, community members need to be on high alert and double check whether or not they are being followed.

Police urge people who suspect anything suspicious to immediately call the police or drive to the nearest police station.

“Criminals are using various modi operandi to commit crimes, posing as workers in different shops in the malls, promising people discounts and disappearing into thin air with their money,” said Sekele.

“They sometimes ask for directions and go as far as using pregnant women to do their dirty jobs.”

Sekele is again appealing to the community to work with police officers in the fight against crime.

To report any crime, contact the Benoni SAPS on 011 747 0053/0230, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
