A netball lover at heart

Const Zunickha Essakjee, a policewoman at the Benoni SAPS, has done herself proud.

Essakjee was presented with the “Sport Star of the Year Award” at the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster Prestige Awards for 2016, held on Friday, September 9, at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg.

She is a member of the Gauteng SAPS provincial women’s netball team, which won the SAPS National Netball Tournament, in Mpumalanga.

The Gauteng team played against all eight provincial teams in order for them to lift the trophy.

The officer, who has been a member of the police service since 2009, has played netball since the age of six years old.

She first played for the Western Cape provincial team before moving to Johannesburg in 2009.

Essakjee said that she believes in fitness and would like to form a netball team for the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, which will play against other clusters.

When asked if she was expecting to be acknowledged as the “Sport Star of the Year”, she said: “I was hoping to win, but I know that I can still achieve more.”

“I now want to make it to the SAPS National Team,” she said.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele said that the Benoni SAPS is proud of Essakjee’s achievement.

“She is a good example to younger officers, as they always need to keep fit with the kind of work we do,” said Sekele.

“She also encourages school pupils to play sport whenever we do school visits.”

Sekele added that police officers need to have healthy bodies and a sharp mind, and sport helps to achieve that.
