Waste removal falls behind again

Refuse has not been collected in Actonville for three consecutive weeks, as of October 27.

“They should have collected here yesterday, but for three weeks the department has been saying they’ll clear up the backlog on the weekends, and nothing has happened,” Haseena Ismail, councillor for Ward 29, said on October 27.

“It is so frustrating, especially the lack of communication from the department.”

This follows after a backlog of two weeks’ garbage in much of Benoni was cleared over the weekend of October 22.

Clr André du Plessis (Ward 23) said the garbage in Brentwood Park and Goedeburg was again not collected during the week of October 27, though the previous backlog was cleared.

“A strike is ongoing at the Benoni Depot and, as the strikers are causing trouble, they will be locked out of the facility,” he explained.

“They are not happy that their overtime pay has been stopped.”

In a previous article, Clr Jacques Meiring (Ward 27) was quoted as saying: “We’ve been told workers were deliberately working slowly, to increase their overtime pay.”

“Now, the department has stopped that, meaning everyone has to stop working at normal knock-off time.”

According to du Plessis, the metro planned to create an SMS line, via which residents would be informed of future interruptions to refuse collection.

On October 27, he said the communication line was not yet functional.
