Perjury continues to bog down police work

Benoni police are again warning the public against reporting false cases.

“People must know we have competent detectives who leave no stone unturned during their investigations,” said Capt Nomsa Sekele, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS spokesperson.

“A case of perjury will be registered against any person opening a false case and you will be arrested.

“We have also realised that people get involved in accidents and, for insurance purposes, report their vehicles as stolen, which is also perjury.”

The City Times previously published an article warning the public against perjury.

In the article, Sekele and Benoni Police Station commander Brig Johan Jacobs were quoted as saying false reports are a big problem for the Benoni SAPS.

In the same breath, Sekele encouraged people to report to the police when their vehicle is, indeed, stolen.

She said people must be honest and report such incidents immediately, in order for the police to do their job properly.

“On several occasions we warned the public to try to beef up the security on their vehicles, like installing an alarm system, a steering lock or a tracking device,” Sekele concluded.
