Some comfort for doomed CBD chickens
An SPCA written warning has led to the improvement of live chickens’ living conditions in the Benoni CBD.
Vicky Finnemore, Benoni SPCA manager, said a local resident reported the birds’ presence on January 9.
The society inspected the Bedford Avenue site and found that the chickens were overcrowded and didn’t have adequate shelter or food.
“The chickens are retired layers that the owner buys at a cull outlet in Midrand – they are then sold for consumption,” said Finnemore.
She said a written warning was issued.
Upon inspection today (January 12), the fowls’ housing conditions had improved.
“There was no suffering, all had water and they weren’t overcrowded,” the manager said.
She said the SPCA will provide hay for the birds, to ensure they have soft bedding to lie on and will conduct regular inspections.
