Case against 12 licensing officers postponed

The 12 licensing officers arrested for fraud and corruption appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court this morning (January 27).

Their case has been postponed to March 29, for further investigation.

The Hawks made seven of the arrests at the Benoni Licensing Department on October 18, while the other five went on the run, but were arrested the same day, near the Benoni Traffic Department.

This came after a year-long countrywide anti-corruption operation by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit.

Operation Crocodile was aimed at clamping down on rogue traffic licensing officials selling driver’s licences and learner’s licences at traffic departments.

The 12 officials were released on bail on October 25.
