Their appearance at the court on March 29 is for representation and a possible date for a bail application.
The suspects were allegedly involved in two robberies at Rebel Fruit and Veg on Main Reef Road, which took place on March 1 and 9.
The men (aged between 25 and 40) were arrested by the Ekurhuleni Central Trio Task Team on March 16 and appeared in court on March 17 and 24.
According to Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele, it is alleged that on the above days, the suspects pounced on the store armed with firearms.
“They ordered the shoppers and the cashiers to keep quiet and demanded money at gunpoint,” said Sekele.
In both incidents undisclosed amounts of cash were taken.
“On March 15, the Benoni Ekurhuleni Central Trio Task Team, together with the investigating officer of the said case, Det Sgt Christian Popela, traced the suspects after receiving information from sources,” Sekele said.
Sekele added that three suspects were arrested at Actonville Hostel and the other four in Wattville.
“After further investigations, it was revealed that the very same suspects were the ones who robbed U-Save Shoprite in Cloverdene,” she said.
One of those arrested is a security guard at the store.
Benoni SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Johan Jacobs praised the officers for their good work and encouraged others to do likewise.
