Metro to end tenant accounts

Ekurhuleni will start phasing out municipal accounts for tenants on July 1.

A press release sent out by the metro stated this will be done “to minimise the risk of accumulated service debt on customers’ properties”.

“This will be phased in over an 18-month period and will ensure the owner has full control and management of the property and services rendered,” the press release stated.

“Property owners must arrange to close linked tenant accounts within this period and ensure that all monies owed by tenants, in respect of services accounts, are paid or transferred to the owner’s account.

“Should the owner not arrange for the closure of tenant accounts within the stipulated period of 18 months, services to the property may be disconnected.”

According to the metro, reinstatement of services will result in the owner being required to enter into a new service level agreement and an increased deposit will be raised.

Residential tenant accounts will be allowed where the person occupying the property qualifies for indigent support in respect of the Indigent Support Policy and for administrators of child-headed households.

This also applies in cases where accounts are under legal administration, liquidation or sequestration, or for deceased estates.

Detailed plans for the phasing-out process are available at all Customer Care Centres.

Comments with regard to the process may be submitted in writing to Revenue, Private Bag X66, Benoni, 1500, before Thursday, June 15.
