Animals not turned away from Western Extension resident’s home

Could you handle having 16 cats on your bed while you’re trying to sleep?

“Put it this way, you don’t have much space,” said Cecilia Morris.

But that’s not all… there are more animals in the Western Extension resident’s house than just 16 cats.

The animal lover has fostered well over 100 animals since 2005 when she took in four kittens from a Spar that were destined for the SPCA.

She couldn’t bear the possibility of them being euthanised, so she took them home.

“It started off as something where I couldn’t look them in the eye and watch them die – now it is my passion, they are my children,” said Morris.

Twelve years later, she has 23 cats, six rabbits, four chickens, four guinea pigs and two dogs.

All the rabbits, three of the chickens and one guinea pig were adopted from the Bunny Park.

The “Kitty Angel” as she is known by some, said she cannot reveal her address as people have dumped their animals on her doorstep – animals she is compelled to take in.

Morris said people must sterilise their animals and not dump them.

She urged pet owners to ask their veterinarian to put them in touch with people such as herself if they are unable to afford their animals.

Although she has only in the last month received donations of food to alleviate her food bill which exceeds R4 000 a month, she said she will forever be an open door for neglected or abandoned animals.

“If it has a heart beat I keep it alive,” she said, adding that she does not believe in putting animals down that have a chance at survival.

Western Extension resident Mary Goby has been one of the many people who have contributed to Morris’ expenses.
