Quilting guild celebrates 30th birthday at BCC

The Benoni Country Club hosted the Golden Rand Guild for Quilters on August 19.

The organisation celebrated its 30th anniversary with world-renowned quilt artist Paul Schutte.

Schutte started the hobby about 35 years ago after completing his wife’s unfinished projects.

He draws inspiration from nature as well as his imagination.

“It’s vibrant, colourful and fabulous,” said Schutte.

“It’s wonderful to see the labour of love.”

Yvonne Holmes, a past president of the Golden Rand Guild for Quilters, said some quilts take years to finish.

“I have one that took me about 17 years to complete,” she said.

Quilters use different techniques to create their quilts, which they do block-by-block.

They categorise quilting as a form of art with fabric.

About 200 people attended the event which saw a variety of people exhibit their work and others who sold various sewing materials.
