EMPD was unaware of speeding on Birch Road

The EMPD was not aware of speeding offences on Birch Road before the City Times alerted them to it.

Chief Sup Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, said the Speed Unit will now conduct “periodic speed enforcement on an ongoing basis” on the arterial route.

Two die in Birch Road accident

He said this in response to a letter sent to him that was published on page 12 of the newspaper dated September 15, headlined ‘Roads are a nightmare’.

The author of the letter highlighted speeding on Birch and Elm roads and a lack of law enforcement to combat reckless driving.

Kgasago said the EMPD investigated the claims.

“Speeding was investigated on Birch Road on August 18 and 10 speedsters were caught in both directions,” Kgasago said.

“The operation was hampered by motorists warning oncoming traffic of the EMPD’s presence.

“More overheavy-duty vehicles also obscured speeding vehicles.”
